Alaa Maso is a Syrian swimmer who was born on January 1, 2000, in Aleppo, Syria.
Alaa lived with his family and started swimming at a very young age. His father, a retired army officer who became a swimming coach, inspired and trained him.

Alaa also trained as a triathlete and knew Yusra Mardini, another swimmer on the Refugee Olympic Team, from their childhood.

In 2015, the ongoing conflict in Syria destroyed Alaa’s training facilities. and the increasing danger forced him to leave his home. He started journey across Europe, eventually settling in Germany in 2016. There, he resumed swimming with coach Emil Guliyev and also returned to school to catch up on the education he missed due to the war.

Alaa Maso competed at Tokyo 2020 in the 50m freestyle.

After the Olympics, Alaa had the honor of signing the “Golden Book” of Hannover at the Town Hall, becoming the first refugee athlete to receive this recognition.
